Apply search strategy

Learning outcomes

  • Conduct and limit searches within the library catalogue and databases
  • Identify relevant databases for your topic

SCU Library Catalogue

Find a range of resources across all disciplines:

  • print and electronic books and journals
  • scholarly/peer-reviewed articles
  • conference proceedings
  • images
  • newspapers
  • sound recordings and scores
  • videos
  • maps
  • theses

Note: signing into the catalogue will provide better results by limiting to publications that you can directly access.

Example search strategy:

  • tourism AND “theme parks”
  • tourism AND (“theme park” OR “amusement park”)

Databases

Find discipline specific resources:

  • type of resources (journal articles, book chapters, newspapers etc.) depends on the database
  • locate relevant databases for your subject area in our LibGuides

Note: if you find an item that is not available in SCU library collection, you can sign-in via the catalogue and request a ‘non-SCU item‘.

Example search strategy:

This example (for the topic community forest management in Australia or New Zealand within the Web of Science database) shows a structured search using the Boolean operators, truncation and nesting using parentheses to tie the search together.

  • (Australia OR “New Zealand” OR Aotearoa) AND (“community forest* management” OR “co-management forest*” OR “joint management forest*” OR “participatory forest*” OR “Indigenous forest* reserve*” OR “decentrali* forest*” OR “integrated conservation development pro*” OR “ICDP*”)

Searches can be refined by or limited to….

  • date
  • full text
  • scholarly (peer-reviewed) journals
  • document/resource type
  • country
